Fake Indeed interview apps install Android spyware
THE BRIEF
Security researchers are warning job seekers about fake Android “interview” apps distributed by people posing as employers on Indeed. The observed lure moves a recruiting conversation toward an APK file hosted outside Google Play and presents it as software needed for an interview. Malwarebytes says analyzed samples imitated Indeed branding, requested powerful Android permissions and acted as droppers for additional spyware. The chain can include a VPN profile and Accessibility access, which may let malicious software read screen content, perform actions, interfere with removal and expose information shown in other apps. This is not a zero-click infection: simply receiving a message does not compromise a phone. The high-risk step is installing the sideloaded package and granting it unusual privileges. Independent technical reporting described the same basic pattern. The available reports do not establish how many people were infected and do not show that Indeed itself was breached. The brand is being impersonated because a job seeker expecting an interview may feel pressure to follow instructions quickly.
WHY IT MATTERS
Job scams work because the request arrives at an emotionally charged moment: the victim believes an opportunity is moving forward. A realistic brand and a supposed deadline can make sideloading feel like a normal hiring step. Accessibility permission is especially dangerous because it can turn one bad installation into screen capture, credential theft or fraudulent actions. The defensive rule is simple and memorable: a legitimate interview should not require an unknown APK, a new VPN profile or Accessibility control.

Job seekers, recruitment teams, career advisers, family members helping applicants, mobile-security teams, fraud investigators and banks supporting customers whose phones, credentials or payment activity may have been exposed.
WHAT TO DO NOW
- Install interview software only from official app stores or the employer’s verified website.
- Stop if a recruiter requests an APK, VPN profile or Accessibility permission.
- Verify the employer using contact details found independently of the message.
- If installed, disconnect the phone and secure email, banking and Indeed accounts from a clean device.
